Crytek and all its CRYs

I’m sure you all know about Crytek by now, it’s the studio that brought us Far Cry back in 2004 and that’s working hard to finish the highly anticipated shooter, Crysis. But what do you really know about this independent studio?

For example did you know it was a European video game development studio based in Frankfurt, Germany? Come on, that was a surprise for me, we all know European games don’t exactly have a good reputation in the gaming community, but that’s mainly because of the “Hollywood” syndrome. European games, like European movies don’t involve huge budgets and aggressive marketing strategies like US developed games do. Still Crytek has managed to somehow get the right funding and developed one of the best graphics engine in the industry, the CryENGINE( and the CryENGINE 2, used in Crysis)

Crytek was established in 1999 by the Turkish brothers, Cevat, Avni and Faruk Yerli, three talented young men with big dreams, ambitions and entrepreneurial skills. They’ve made powerful publishing partners like Ubisoft and EA Games and financial partners like the Dutch Erste Bank.

Over the years, although it’s only been working on two games (one of which hasn’t even been launched yet), Crytek has received more awards than many other more “active” studios. That really says a lot about the professionalism of the team at Crytek. This team is made up of over 120 people from more than 27 countries all over the world.

What I love about these guys is they put their CRY trade mark on everything they do: Far CRY, CRYsis, CRYengine, pretty good publicity strategy on their part.

Crytek may not sound like such an impressive company, but in my opinion, a European studio that started from scratch and has become one of the best developers in the global gaming industry isn’t something you come across very often. Good on you Crytek!
