Spider-Man: Web of Shadows gets teaser site

Everyone’s favorite superhero, Spider-Man, will be swinging back into the video-game business in Activision’s next title, Spider-Man: Web of Shadows.

No details have been revealed about this upcoming Spidey title, not even what systems it’s being developed for, but it does have a neat teaser website, seizecontrol.com. As the name suggests, developers are giving players the ability to “control everything”. Although I’m convinced they’re exaggerating with that remark, it seems players will affect the outcome of the game, the way Spider-Man fights his opponents, which of his weapons get upgraded, his allies and the fate of the city of New York.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is being developed by Activision’s internal studios Treyarch (they’ve worked on a Spider-Man game in the past) and Shaba Games. The game is expected to be released sometime this fall.

Hell’s Highway coming in August

Gearbox’s latest entry in the Brothers in Arms series finally gets a release date, and it’s not as bad as we thought.

After first being announced in April 2006 for a holiday release of that same year, developers pushed back the game for the last part of 2007, but it didn’t come out last year either, and although a new release was scheduled for early 2008, all we got was another delay, for fiscal year 2009 (which basically meant sometime between April 1, 2008 – March 31, 2009).

Fortunately we won’t have to wait until 2009 to experience more tactical FPS combat in the same WWII setting, or at least that’s what the latest trailer says. It hints towards an August release and this time I hope Gearbox mean it.

The game is being developed for the PS3, Xbox 360 and the good-old PC.

Pre-order Conan-get early access

Funcom and Eidos have announced they are rewarding those who pre-order their upcoming MMORPG, Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

Age of Conan will apparently be released in Europe on March 23rd and if you pre-order it now you will have access to the game on May 20th, that’s a 3-day head-start. The developer and publishers have another bonus for those of you willing to spend cash early, they’ll also include an exclusive mount: the Killer Rhino or the War Mammoth.

Unfortunately not all video-game retailers are participating in this pre-order deal, so your surest bet would be to go with Gamestop or Amazon.

The Sims exceeds 100 million sold units

The best selling PC franchise in the history of video games passes the unbelievable 100 million-sold units mark.

EA announced today that the simulator series continues to bring in piles of cash, even though the first game was first released back in 2000. Over this eight years period, The Sims has been translated into 22 different languages and sold in 60 different countries. Unbelievable figures, but not as unbelievable as the $4 billion dollars it cashed in during this time, according to analysts.

Very impressive for a series that only sports 2 core games and a numerous line-up of add-ons and spin-offs. The Sims 3 is scheduled for 2009 and the developers say players will have the chance to freely walk their characters through the neighborhood.

EA said that “If 100 million boxes of The Sims were lined up end-to-end, they would stretch from New York city to Moscow. And, with 100 million sold, one out of seven homes in Europe and one out of three homes in America would have a product of The Sims franchise.”

Way to go Sims!

Afro Samurai slashes on PS3 and 360 in fall

Afro Samurai finally gets its already long announced video-game and it’s being developed by Namco Bandai, in the spirit of the manga and anime series.

Samuel L. Jackson will star in the game as Afro, the second-best samurai in the world, out to seek revenge for his father being killed by justice, a powerful fighter who cannot be killed by conventional means. So it will be up to the players to chase this Justice and his minions throughout a medieval imaging of Japan and leaving a bloody trail.

The game’s graphics will be cell-shaded, which I think befits it very well and you’ll be glad to know it’s going to have an M rating, which means you’ll enjoy plenty of bloodshed, dismemberments and beheadings.

As in the short anime series, the soundtrack will have hip-hop influences and it will be produced by Wu-Tang Clan veteran RZA. Music will have a great role in Afro Samurai, influencing the enemy AI and the gameplay (kind of like in Samurai Champloo?) says Namco Bandai.

Afro Samurai will be out in the US for the PS3 and Xbox 360, this fall.

Bourne Conspiracy demo out in May

A demo for the highly anticipated action game will be released sometime next month, according to CVG.

American Xbox 360 owners rejoice, a demo for The Bourne Conspiracy will hit Xbox Live Marketplace next month, says Vivendi. No dates have been revealed for Europe but it’s expected it will come a bit later, considering the game will first release in the US. Also nothing confirmed for the PlayStation Network either, strange.

The Bourne Conspiracy promises to be a mega crossover between the Bourne books and all the motion pictures, which should make for an interesting game…hopefully.

Retailers struggling with huge GTA IV demand

Well GTA IV must be a God-sent gift to all the video-games retailers in the world, as it looks like it will be the best selling video-game of 2008.

Several retailers have admitted that they are surely going to struggle to meet consumer demands when Rockstar’s GTA IV launches, on April 29. However, if you’re one of the lucky few that have preordered the limited edition version of Grand Theft Auto 4, you shouldn’t worry, retailers promise you will get your hands on a copy on day one. For the many who have preordered the standard version, the news aren’t that good- you may not be able to play GTA IV as soon as you’d wish.

Here’s what GAME had to say on the matter: “We cannot guarantee delivery on the day of release for orders placed on or after the 7th of April. We are currently sold out of this item. All orders will be dispatched on a first come, first served basis.”

Gamestation continues on the same note: “Due to unprecedented demand for the standard editions of Grand Theft Auto IV, we are no longer taking pre-orders for this version.”

With some analysts predicting GTA IV will sell up to six million copies in its first week, all this shouldn’t come as a surprise…aftar all Karl Lagerfeld is going to be in it :)

Haze hits Europe on May 23

After several push-backs PS3’s FPS finally gets a final release date, but for Europe only.

Although the game was announced for May back in February, but no one really believed it, and they had a pretty good reason, considering all the delays. Haze was originally planned for the first half of 2007, then it was pushed back to before March this year and then again to autumn.

Today Ubisoft announced that the PS3 exclusive sci-fi shooter, developed by Free Radical Design will reach European retailer shelfs on May 23. No official date was disclosed for North America by the publisher, but according to online retailers it will reach Americans on May 20.

What’s very interesting is that Rock Band for the 360 will hit European stores on the same date, May 23. Let the battle begin.

Warhammer 40.000:Dawn of War 2 coming in 2009

Sins of a Solar Empire add-on in the works

The highly praised PC space strategy game gets its first expansion pack.

Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock, the game’s publisher revealed that the company is already working on an add-on for Sins of a Solar Empire, during an interview with Wired.

The much-awaited add-on will finally offer gamers a full campaign, a storyline and some new playable factions. It’s exactly what the original game lacked, and considering it got great reviews from all the major gaming sites, I wonder what score this expansion will get. We’ll find out in the “reasonably near future”.

Current PCs too weak for Supreme Commander 2

sc.jpgChris Taylor, head of Gas Powered Games, said current hardware is stalling his plans for the next entry in the Supreme Commander series.

Taylor said “I’ve been told by my engineers that for Supreme Commander 2, I don’t enough memory in a PC with 4Gb of RAM to have more factions.” He continued “We’ll return to the Supreme Commander universe again, but we’ll just have to see when that day is. Maybe when everybody has 64-bit processors…”

I guess we won’t be seeing a full sequel to the acclaimed RTS, and we have only technological progress to blame for that. And here I was thinking technology’s moving at an unbelievable pace.
