40 Gb PS3 announced in North America

After announcing the release of a new, 40 Gb PlayStation 3 model for Europe, Japan and Australia a few weeks back, Sony has finally announced this version for release in North America.

This new PS3 will be launched on November 2nd and it will cost $399. It will not have any memory card readers and it will only sport 2 USB ports, opposed to the 4 of the 60 Gb and 80 Gb models. Also, as announced before, the 40 Gb PS3 won’t feature backward PS2 compatibility. It will however have built-in IEEE 802.11 b/g wireless networking capability.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has also announced a $100 price cut for the 80Gb PlayStation 3, which now costs $499. Although it remains the most expensive next generation console on the market, the PS3 may appeal to movie enthusiasts because it’s the only gaming system that can play HD-DVD’s without requiring a HD player (like the Xbox 360). Also it’s the cheapest Blu-ray player on the market, as the cheapest standalone Blu-ray player reaches $400. So there’s hope for the PS3 yet.
