Ultimate Band coming from Disney

disney.jpgThese days it seems everyone wants to capitalize on singing platformers. The success of games like Rock Band, Singstar or Guitar Hero is definitely enough to make others want a piece of the pie.

Next in line to produce a rhythm-based game is Disney, who will soon launch Ultimate Band for the Nintendo Wii and DS. The game will aim to impress by allowing gamers to play it using only the Wiimote and the DS stylus. No bands or songs have been announced yet, but Disney promises that “some of the biggest names in rock, alternative, popular, emo, and indie rock music” from the 60s to present day will be available.

The two versions of Ultimate Band are completely different, in the Wii version, players will play throughout the career of a rock-star, starting from singing in a garage to International stadiums. The DS game will feature a recording studio, where players can create their own tunes.

Ultimate Band is scheduled for release during this year’s holiday season.

Resident Evil 0 is a Japan exclusive

resident-evil-zero.jpgCapcom has announced it will not release Resident Evil 0 anywhere outside the borders of native Japan.

It has been confirmed that Japanese developer Capcom is working on a new Resident Evil title for the Nintendo Wii. The bad news is most of us may never play it, since it’s only getting released in Japan. Capcom hasn’t even announced a later release date for Resident Evil 0 in the US or Europe.

Resident Evil 0 is a prequel ported from the Nintendo GameCube. Apparently gamers will only play the game using the Wiimote.

Valkyria Chronicles is in the works

valkyria_chronicles.jpgSEGA has announced it has started working on Valkyria Chronicles, a tactical RPG for the PlayStation3.

Valkyria Chronicles is set in an alternate Europe, around the 1930s, during a conflict between the Empire and Federation, where the bad guys uncover an ancient race and use it to conquer the world.

SEGA will use the CANVAS engine for the game’s graphics, which will make it look like a watercolor painting in motion (something like Okami perhaps?). “With its stunningly unique visual style and the new BLITZ tactical system, Valkyria Chronicles is sure to entice gamers to enter its special world and join Welkin and Alicia in their cause to save Gallia” said Elliot Chin, director of marketing for SEGA of America.

Valkyria Chronicles is set to be released in fall 2008, exclusively for the PS3.

Turning Point attacks Europe this March

turning_point.jpgFor some undisclosed reason, Codemasters has pushed the release date of its shooter to March 14 for Europe.

Turning Point: Fall of Liberty, a game that offers a different take on World War 2, where the Nazis actually won the war, won’t be hitting European retailers on February 29, as originally announced, but two weeks later, on March 14.

In Turning Point: Fall of Liberty you’ll be playing as an average American guy, fighting for survival against the invading Nazi troops, who later forms a resistance group and takes the fight back to the old continent.

The original release date of February 29 hasn’t changed for the US.

Guild Wars reaches 5 million sold copies

guild_wars.jpgWorld of Warcraft’s biggest competitor for the title of most popular MMORPG has sold more than 5 million copies since its original release.

Last month, Blizzard announced its MMMORPG turned social phenomenon, reached 10 million subscribers. As a response, ArenaNet made a similar announcement, stating Guild Wars, its nonsubscribtion-based MMO sold over 5 million copies since its release.

Both WoW and Guild Wars are doing very well but we have to be realistic, there’s no real competition between them, at least not as far as I’m concerned, WoW is undisputed.

DualShock 3 out in US on April 15

PS3 fans living outside Japan will finally be able to experience the rumble feature without having to import controllers from the land of the samurais.

Sony has announced that the DualShock 3 will finally be available for purchase in the states starting April 15, for the price of $54.99. I’m sure the phrase on everyone’s lips is “it’s about time!” and I’d have to agree, it’s been four months since rumble DualShock 3 was released in Japan.

Unfortunately no date has been set for a European release, so I guess they’ll have to keep their fingers crossed or just import from Japan and, soon, USA.

Resident Evil 5 coming out this year?

If we were to believe what Capcom’s Chris Kramer said, then yes, the fifth installment in the popular survival shooter comes out this year.

Chris Kramer, senior director of communications and community at Capcom, had an interview with Xbox 360’s Major Nelson. When asked what is coming up from Capcom this year, Kramer said: “We have a really fantastic year ahead of us, a year that’s going to include games like…Resident Evil 5…”. Although this isn’t an official release statement, I like to believe that the game is indeed scheduled for this year.

Here’s what Kramer had to say about Resident Evil 5: “Just being able to see Resident Evil 5 running, I’m like ‘Oh my god!’ Honestly, when we start showing more of that, when we start letting people go hands-on with that, people are going to flip out.”

Play Starcraft 2 and Wrath of the Lich King in June

Blizzard is organizing its Worldwide Invitation event in Paris in June and has announced it will give everyone invited the chance to try out Starcraft 2 and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

If you’re in Paris this June, over 16 years old (if you’re younger you have to be escorted by a responsible adult) and have around $100 to pay for the ticket, you have to stop by Blizzard’s event, as aside from getting the chance to play probably the most anticipated games of the moment, you might hear some other major revelations.

PS3 faces piracy threat

Ever since it launched, the PS3 has been a target for hackers that tried to find a way to make the console work with pirated video-games. Until this day all their attempts failed, but it seems they’ve started making some serious progress.

Just like with the PSP, hackers have found a way of running video game code from external and internal USB drives, without having to modify the console itself. Although this only works on Test PlayStation 3 (a developer version of the console), it’s still a great breakthrough for piracy, hackers can now analyze how the PS3 handles the data, and come up with other developments.

Still the Sony can lock down the PS3 with Firmware updates and, large video-games downloads are sure to lower the pirates’ moral.

Activision predicts Wii to dominate 2008

One of the biggest publishers in the video-games industry, Activision, used its recent earning release conference to predict hardware sales in 2008

Activision expects Nintendo Wii’s reign in the US to continue in 2008 with over 6 million expected sold units at retail. The Xbox 360 is expected to come second with 4-5 million sold consoles, while Sony’s PS3 coming in third with 3-4 million expected shipped units.

In the handheld department, Activision predicts that the combined sales of the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP will top 10 million sold units.

Activision’s predictions don’t match EA’s, who last week declared it believes the PS3 will outsell the 360 both in the US and Europe.

New, smaller Cell chip for PS3 coming soon

IBM will soon introduce a smaller, less power-hungry processor that might make PS3’s price drop even more.

The Sony PlayStation 3 is powered by an IBM 65nm SOI processor, a very powerful thing but also very large in size and energy-consuming. But it’s about to become obsolete, as it will be replaced by a smaller, more efficient 45nm high-k processor.

This new chip will consume 40% less energy than the 65nm one, which means less cooling is necessary, thus making the console cheaper to produce and more reliable.

It’s yet unknown if this will make Sony lower the price of its console even more, but in any case this is great news for everybody.

CoD4 beats Halo3 on Xbox Live

The battle for the title for most popular game on Xbox Live proves to be a hard-fought one as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare manages to steal the crown from Halo 3 once again.

After taking the number one spot on Xbox Live for the first time in January, only to loose it back to Halo 3 after only one week, CoD4 has managed to reclaim its spot at the top, pushing Bungie’s shooter back to second place. Gears of War manages to keep holding on to the last spot on the podium, coming at number 3.

Infinity Ward’s FPS fully deserves its glory as it is one of the best shooters in history and it has one numerous awards, including best game of 2007.

Wii buries Namco-Bandai arcades

Namco-Bandai has announced it will be closing 50 of its video games arcades in Japan because of the Nintendo Wii.

Yuji Machida, spokesman for the Japanese company said that this measure comes as a response to the low interest Japanese have for arcades, ever since the Wii was launched. Now people can play arcade games in the comfort of their own homes, thanks to the console’s innovative control system. The Wiimote can be use as the arcade classic light gun, while others peripherals like the Balance Board really make everything possible on the Wii.

Another cause the closing of the arcades is the growing price of petrol, many people choose to save money by cutting back on long drives to shopping centers.
