Call of Duty 4 sells 2 million copies on PS3

According to VG Chartz, Activision’s popular FPS reached the 2 million sold PS3 copies milestone last week.

Thus, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare joins Motorstorm and Resistance: Fall of Men as the Trio, the only 3 games on the PS3 to sell 2 million copies. This golden trio, so to speak, will soon turn into a quartet, as Assassin’s Creed reached the 1.99 million sold copies mark and will surely reach 2 million very shortly.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare was in many people’s opinion the best video game to come out in 2007 and it has been doing pretty well in the sales department on every platform.

PS3 to beat Xbox 360 in Battle for Europe

PS3 officials have announced that the number of PAL PlayStation 3s will exceed that of Xbox 360s by the end of this summer.

David Reeves, the man in charge with Sony’s affairs in Europe said: “ In terms of installed base in some of our major markets, such as France, Spain, Germany, Italy, plus some distributor territories in smaller markets like Switzerland, our current cumulative installed base is now higher than that of the Xbox 360.”

Reeves also added that Sony’s wonder console has outsold Microsoft’s machine by 3:1 last week in PAL territories, and he expects the PS3 to outnumber the 360 in Europe, by the end of this summer.

All this talk of Europe, Germany and France made me think about WW2. Maybe Microsoft represents Germany and Sony, the Allied Forces. If history repeats itself, will Sony come up on top in the end?!?

World of Warcraft reaches 10 million subscribers

Blizzard announced on Tuesday that its award winning MMORPG, World of Warcraft has reached the 10 million subscribers mark.

The company actually defined what a WoW subscriber is, there would not be any misinterpretations: “individuals who have paid a subscription fee or have an active prepaid card to play World of Warcraft, as well as those who have purchased the game and are within their free month of access. Internet Game Room players who have accessed the game over the last thirty days are also counted as subscribers.”

The subscribers are distributed as follows: 2.5 million in USA, 2 million in Europe and 5.5 million in Asia. Here’s what Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment had to say about this: “It’s very gratifying to see gamers around the world continuing to show such enthusiasm and support for World of Warcraft,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment sa. “We’re always pleased to welcome new players to the game, and we’re looking forward to sharing the next major content update with the entire community in the months ahead.”

Way to go World of Warcraft, I guess, although I’m not a big fan of the game or the MMO phenomenon in general.

Wii close to beating PS2 sales record

2008 could be the year the Nintendo Wii pulverizes another record, as analysts say it might top PS2’s yearly sales record.

CVG reports that analysts from the Daiwa Institute of Research are convinced that the Wii will break the all-time sales record, held by Sony’s PS2 in 2003. Judging by the evolution of Nintendo’s console, this was to be expected, even though PS2 is still the most popular console ever, the Wii has become a social phenomenon, driving the masses to doing crazy things just to get their hands on one.

“Next fiscal year will be crucial for the company as the Wii may top the sales record held by the PlayStation 2.” says Soichiro Fukuda, an analyst at Nikko Citigroup. According to him PlayStation 2 holds the record of console sales in one year, with 22.5 million in the year ended March 2003.

Wii sales might also help Nintendo dethrone Sony as the larger console manufacturer in the world in 2008.

Eve Online hits Steam

Eve Online is the first ever MMO available for download via Steam, and to celebrate the occasions both parties have a promotion coming up.

Eve Online has just become available for players to download through Steam services, and to celebrate this historic event, Valve and CCP thought they’d offer their clients a little treat: a free 21 day trial and the slashing of $5 off the first month’s subscription fee. It ain’t a lot but hey, at least it’s more than nothing.

Eve Online is among the first MMOs ever created and it is set in a space themed universe where gamers can take part in space combat or exploration.

Silent Hill Origins for PS2

Originally a PSP exclusive, Origins is heading for Sony’s PS2, with improved control.

This prequel to Konami’s horror franchise tells the tale of Travis Grady, a trucker that gets sidetracked to the foggy town of Silent Hill and gets to experience first hand its…unique hospitality.

A release date hasn’t been announced yet but I hope the developers take their time on this one, maybe tweak the controls a little better, especially for the combat situations, that’s where the PSP versions really sucked.

Hilary Clinton to play prostitute in GTA 4

Rockstar pays back Hilary for saying all those bad things about their flagship, the GTA series, by giving her a small part in the upcoming GTA 4.

Seriously News reports that the developer has announced in a blog posted press release that it intends to make all the prostitutes in GTA 4 look like the democrats’ presidential candidate.

Clinton has long been an enemy of the GTA franchise and violent games in general, going as far as asking for a federal investigation into GTA: San Andreas, to probe how children can access violent and pornographic scenes from the game, online. “Being able to kill people in a virtual world is harmful to society. It’s why I spend all of my time in the Senate cleaning up video games instead of improving real life” said Hilary.

Rockstar is going beyond looks, after having sex with the player, the prostitute will say something like: “will you still vote for me?”, and after being killed, with her last breath, she’ll say: “Now I’ll never get to be president!”

This all sounds very funny, actually it sounds to funny to be true, un fortunately we weren’t able to track this blog posted press release, in order to confirm this news. Still even if it turns out to be bogus, it’s still a nice idea.

Do you want enough money for GTA 4 when it comes out? Is your paycheck not

Kane & Lynch figures confirm crime games sell

Kane & Lynch has managed to sell over 1 million copies since its release in November, announces Eidos. They say they’re not surprised…well I am!

I’m not saying Kane & Lynch is a bad game, it’s…mediocre, I think that best describes this 3rd person shooter that doesn’t really bring anything new to the genre. Many irritating bugs, a story that could have been so much better, unimpressive graphics and a rather basic command system don’t really characterize a box-office success.

But, apparently when it comes to crime themed video-games, gamers are prepared to overlook anything. Just remember Scarface, it was, in my opinion, even worse than Kane & Lynch, and yet it also managed to sell quite well. I’m pretty sure that if it had a proper marketing campaign, even a fluke like Made Man could have become a hit.

It’s obvious the audience is so fascinated by the criminal underworld, a world they could never be a part of in real life, that they don’t really care how good the game really is. Now don’t get me wrong, I love crime-themed games, I’m a big fan of Mafia, an incredible experience in every way, but I just wish they’d spend more time polishing them.

Just for the record, I am also a victim of this “criminal lifestyle illusion” and I’ve also bought Kane & Lynch but…at least I regret it!

Tomb Raider Underworld delayed

Due, in part, to SCI’s recent financial problems, Lara’s upcoming adventure has been pushed back to late 2008.

Unfortunately Lara won’t be back with a new adventure as soon as everybody hoped, Eidos has announced the game has been delayed to this year’s holiday season. SCI, the parent company of Eidos, isn’t doing very well these days, its stock price has dropped dramatically and the company will post an operating loss this year. There have even been rumors of an imminent takeover by Time Warner, Ubisoft and others.

I hope Eidos can get over this slump, and bring us another incredible adventure starring the most charismatic female lead in gaming, Lara Croft.

PSP classics revived via PlayStation Store

Old PSP games that still raise interest in gamers but can’t be found at retailers anymore will be made available through the PlayStation Store.

John Koller, SCEA’S Senior Product Manager for the PSP, talked about the possibility of bringing back classics like Wipeout or Twisted Metal, that fans keep asking for, but retailers aren’t interested in carrying, on the PlayStation Network.

Koller also talked about the UMD format movies, saying they are aware that selling old flicks at a price of $29.99 can really upset their customers, and they are willing to cut down the price. The retailers don’t want to hear a word of this though.

Nvidia users get Portal for free

Valve has decided to reward gamers who use Nvidia graphic cards by allowing them to download a version of Portal, for free.

Portal: First Slice is supposed to be a special version of Valve’s innovative FPS. If you you’re an Nvidia user, all you have to do is log on to www.steamgames.com/nvidia1 and take the test. Steam will some how check if you actually have an Nvidia graphics card in your computer, and if you do, the game will be made available to you.

This news kind of sucks if you’re NOT an Nvidia user, though…

MGS4 is almost finished

Assistant producer Ryan Payton says the game is on track for a Q2 2008 release on all major markets.

According to Payton, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is already playable from start to finish and will shortly enter the bug testing phase. The team at Kojima Productions is apparently working hard to keep the release deadline, as the big man himself, Hideo Kojima already feels embarrassed for the game not being released in 2007.

Kojima Productions is supposedly planning a Gears of War-like “Emergence Day” marketing strategy, also releasing a huge load of game info for the fans.

PS3 Firmware updates to be less frequent

Sony realizes that releasing Firmware updates at such short intervals can be somewhat annoying and plans to slow down the pace.

PlayStation director of network operations, Eric Lempel spoke to MTV about the frequent PS3 updates we’ve been seeing lately and the effect they have on gamers. Even though new features should be available for PS3 users as soon as possible, Sony realizes releasing updates so often is irritating and is considering slowing down the process.

Here is what Lempel had to say on the matter: “We’re trying to certainly cut down on the amount of times we do it. But on occasion when we’ve got these good features ready to go, let’s give them out to the consumers. Let’s get them out there. We definitely understand that it does happen frequently and that can be somewhat annoying to some users.”
