Buy a Sony HDTV, get a free PS3

If you have the cash and want to give yourself a really nice present this holiday season you might be interested in Sony’s latest promotion.

To further promote their already successful line of HDTVs, Sony has come up with a very interesting offer for its customers. Unfortunately, as you might suspect, the process isn’t that simple as it sounds, you have to follow a series of steps in order to get your hands on that PS3:

  1. First you need to apply and be approved for a Sony Card;
  2. Then you have to choose the HDTV you want to buy, from their approved list. So you can’t just go and buy their cheapest model and expect them to throw in the console;
  3. You need to purchase the TV through Sony’s website; The downside of this is that you pay full retail on your purchase.
  4. You have to hurry because the promotion is only available until December 31st 2007.

Little Big Planet on PS3 delayed

PS3 owners have become used to having their dreams shattered by announcements of video games being delayed and it seems like things aren’t about to change in 2008.

It seems the revolutionary platform everybody’s waiting for, Little Big Planet, isn’t coming out any time soon, like everyone believed, but rather in the fall of next year at the earliest. Sure nothing’s official yet but considering the demo announced for this fall never came out and Three Speech, SCEA’s unofficial blog, announced the game would come out in September or October 2008, it’s safe to say we won’t be playing Little Big Planet this spring.

Best Buy fears Wii mob scenes

Receiving a number of Wiis just in time for Christmas is a real joy and, at the same time, a real problem for retailers across the country, as the people are so desperate for the Nintendo machine, that you don’t know what they’ll do.

So I guess I can understand why some Best Buy shops avoid displaying or announcing their newly received Nintendo Wiis. Dave Wolf, General Manager at a Best Buy near Baltimore, said that he chose not to display any Wii in the shop, in stead employees walk around and tell people they have them in stock. This way they could avoid mob scenes.

Teen gets phone book instead of PS3 for Christmas

Now how would you fell if you wanted a Sony PS3 very badly and you saw the it under the Christmas tree, just waiting to be unpacked? You’d probably be thrilled, but what if there would be something else in the package?

That’s what happened to 13 year old Brandon Burns from Camarillo, California, who tore the PS3 box to bits only to find a…Thousand Oaks phone book. Now the kid says he felt more like laughing than getting mad when he saw his “awesome” present and I can understand that, he probably thought it was some kind of joke. Only it wasn’t, his parents really had got him a PS3. His mother, Nicole Burns, suspects an employee from EBGames, the store where she bought the…PS3 box, really wanted the Sony console, so he took it and replaced it with the phone book.

Ninja Gaiden DS comes out March ‘08

If you’re a fan of Ryu Hayabusa and can’t wait until the end of next year to play Ninja Gaiden 2 on the Xbox 360, you’re in luck, starting March 2008, your favorite stealth assassin comes to the DS.

Even though it won’t look as pretty as it would on a next generation console, Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword promises to be a memorable adventure. According to the guys at Team Ninja, Ryu will bring many of his signature moves to Nintendo’s handheld, including the Izuna Drop and Cicada Slash as well as a lot of Nimpo magic.

The game will imply a lot of stylus usage, with players having to do a lot of tapping and slashing in order to come out victorious in the battle they face. Stylus or no stylus, I just hope they make this one a bit easier than the original Ninja Gaiden, or at least add a lower difficulty setting.

Chinese Wii knock-off gets sequel, Vii 2

While Nintendo is too busy these days, keeping up with demand for the Wii, to even consider working on an improved version of their revolutionary system, the Chinese that created the Vii, that funny replica of the Nintendo Wii, already have a sequel ready, the Vii 2.

Sure it might not have been as good as a Wii, it might have had games that fit better on a late 80’s-early 90’s NES, but hey it’s Chinese what do you expect? Anyway the Vii must have been quite a success in China since the developers have already created the next generation system. The Vii 2 decided it can do better and instead of just copying stuff from Nintendo, they turned their eyes to the Sony PS 3 and borrowed its design. It’s even got a PORWER button (that’s right…porwer), so it’s clear, these guys are professionals. The remote still has the same design as the Wiimote, the same button layout, and a trigger on the backside.

Take-Two acquisition by EA imminent

As everyone expected, the merger between Vivendi Games and Activision that led to the birth of Activision-Blizzard, the new no.1 video game publisher in the world, didn’t sit too well with, now second biggest publisher, EA Games. So they’re thinking of solutions to get back in the top spot, and acquiring Take-Two Interactive seems to be their best bet.

As much as I hate to see juggernauts like EA taking over ambitious, independent developers and publishers, this is the world we live in, no matter how good you are, if you don’t have the financial means to compete you eventually have to accept the compromise of an acquisition. According to many this is the fate of Take-Two, creator and publisher of titles like: GTA, BioShock, Civilization, Manhunt, Midnight Club and many more. Mike Hackey, analyst for Janco Partners, spoke with GameDaily and said that having so many popular titles, many created in-house, is in fact what makes the company such an attractive target for the evil EA empire: “The company owns a large stable of owned and internally developed IP franchises. The recent acquisition of Activision by Vivendi and Bioware Pandemic by Electronic Arts, are clear examples of owned IP value recognition, in our opinion.”

PS3 becoming lead development platform

At least that’s what Jack Tretton, chief of SCEA, says. According to him times are changing and developers first develop video games for the PS3 and then, maybe, port down to other platforms.

“We hear better and better things from the third party publishers everyday. We are meeting with them on a regular basis and are getting a lot of feedback from them in terms of their needs. We are now starting to see developers creating games on PS3 and then porting them to other platforms such as EA’s Burnout.” said the Sony boss.

He went on to say: “Developers are telling us that they are starting to create their games on PS3 first and take advantage of the hardware capabilities and then port down to other platforms so we are seeing tremendous progress from the third party community in terms of what they are able to do with our development kits. You will see some very nice things in 2008 coming from our third party partners in addition to what you will see this holiday.”

Man burns boy for playing Nintendo

Sergio Bautista-Gallegos, 20, found no other way to punish his 4 year old child for playing Nintendo, than to burn his arm over an open flame.

Bautista-Gallegos reported he became angry when the 4 year old ignored his demand to stop playing a Nintendo video game, so he took the boy and held his arm on a lighted burner on a gas stove. How sick can you be jeffe?!?

The poor kid was treated for second degree burns at Cooper University Hospital. It was here that the doctors also discovered other bruises and scrapes on his body, all inflicted by Sergio “the brute” Bautista-Gallegos, who is now also charged with assaulting the boy’s mother and will shortly face trial.

Dad abandons daughter to play video-games

In Hong-Kong a man ahs been prosecuted for abandoning his 7 years old daughter, just so he could go play video-games.

31 year old Chan Sing, left his daughter waiting in the street for about an hour, while he went into an arcade to play video-games. According to Earth Times he said he had to do this because the arcade did not allow children inside.

The man then took his child to a restaurant, bought her something to eat and a soda and left her there for another three hours, while he went to the arcade for another gaming session. The restaurant staff ultimately called the cops to track down the father, who, when arrested, said: “I have to play video-games!”.

Final Fantasy I & II coming to PSP

Square Enix has confirmed that updated versions of popular RPGs Final Fantasy I & II will be released for the Sony PSP.

The games have improved visuals and character art, new dungeons to explore and 16:9 widescreen support and also an updated camera view mode that promises to make things look a lot more interesting.

Nice to see some classics come back to life, Square Enix deserves to be commended for giving gamers, that weren’t around in the 80’s, the chance to experience the beginnings of one of the most popular series in video games history.

Soda companies pin obesity on gaming

As we all know, obesity is a serious issue especially in the US, and fat kids are becoming the majority (let’s see you pick on them now), but who carries the blame for turning the youth into useless balls of fat? Well, I know what you’re thinking, lots of fat food and soda right? Maybe the food has something to do with it, but definitely not the sweet soda. At least that’s what the American Beverage Association (ABA) is saying.

Call of Duty 5 returns to WWII?

There’s been a lot of speculation on the web about whether the next installment in the CoD franchise will return to World War II and judging by the evidence, it could happen.

It all started when Treyarch, who worked on a number of CoD games in the past, posted an ad for a Call of Duty level designer, with the following job description:

Killzone 2 screens are altered

If you’ve seen the recent Killzone 2 screenshots, I’m sure you were quite astonished by how nice the game looks. Bad news is they’re not exactly real.

All the questions going around the internet about how smooth the screens look, made Guerilla admit they’ve “slightly” doctored the pictures to make them look a bit polished. “They are only the tiniest bit touched up. Short answer is yes. Long answer is that there was a little bit of color-correction done and some minor polish, but nothing major.” said Seb Downie, QA manager at Guerilla Games.
